First-year undergraduate and graduate students were introduced to Stanford’s thriving culture of sustainability during their first moments on campus, thanks to an increased partnership among Sustainable Stanford, the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education (VPUE), and the Graduate Life Office. Sustainable Stanford partners kicked off undergraduate New Student Orientation (NSO) week by giving out Sustainable Living Guides and collecting pledges to “live Cardinal green.” Later that week, freshmen and transfers experienced Stanford’s green event culture while enjoying a healthy, locally sourced meal served on 100% compostable serviceware at the Zero Waste Lunch. The green event theme continued throughout undergraduate NSO as VPUE offered compostable materials and collection at all of its sponsored events. Graduate students learned about campus sustainability opportunities at the Graduate Student Activities Fair and were able to experience one of those opportunities firsthand at a Graduate NSO–sponsored tour of the Central Energy Facility. Sustainable Stanford continues to forge and strengthen its bond with incoming students every year, and this time is crucial in showcasing how sustainability is integrated into daily life on campus.
