On November 16, students rallied in White Plaza and outside the university president’s building to demand that Stanford fully divest from all fossil fuel investments. These events, largely organized by the Fossil Free Stanford student organization, were held in hopes of persuading the university to go beyond its 2014 announcement that it would divest from coal investments. During the rally, student leaders requested an impromptu meeting with Stanford University President John Hennessy to discuss their demands. Students were encouraged to make an appointment and follow traditional protocols to receive a meeting. In response, dozens of students began a sit-in that lasted five days. While awareness and support from the Stanford community were raised through the events, no major outcomes emerged.
