Students Organize Petition for Sustainable Serviceware at Campus Cafés

In efforts to reduce the number of single-use coffee cups that are used on campus every day and destined for the landfill, Students for a Sustainable Stanford launched an awareness campaign and petition to encourage the Starbucks at Tresidder Union to begin offering its patrons compostable cups after the corporation began offering these cups at other franchise locations around the country. Nearly 650 campus community members signed the petition. An estimated 30,000 disposable coffee cups are thrown away on Stanford’s campus every single day; the petition is a first step toward minimizing that number. A number of other cafés on campus already use compostable serviceware.
