Members of the incoming class of 2018 had the opportunity to experience the thriving culture of sustainability at Stanford from their first steps on campus during New Student Orientation. Sustainable Stanford partners welcomed the freshmen with a sustainability open house and a zero-waste lunch. All new students attend this annual lunch, which helps to educate them on proper waste practices on campus. A healthy, locally sourced meal is served in compostable and recyclable containers, and volunteers help staff waste stations to ensure that each student understands the correct way to sort waste. Copies of the “Student Sustainable Living Guide” and other materials are made available for interested students, and all students receive emails before they arrive about Stanford’s commitment to sustainability. Sustainable Stanford maintains and strengthens the bond with incoming students every year and will seek ways to expand this partnership in 2015-16.
