In December 2014, the U.S. Senate confirmed Franklin “Lynn” Orr, a professor of energy resources sciences, as under secretary for science and energy at the Department of Energy (DOE). Orr was nominated by President Obama in November 2013. As under secretary, Orr oversees all of the DOE’s science research programs, including those at SLAC and other national laboratories. During his three decades at Stanford, Orr served as founding director of both the Precourt Institute for Energy and the Global Climate and Energy Project, as well as dean of the Stanford School of Earth, Energy & Environmental Sciences.
