The School of Medicine’s Office of Facilities Planning and Management integrates sustainability into all activities. Green cleaning systems, recycling, composting, water use reduction, and sustainable efforts in new construction are just some of the areas where the school has focused. Because many of its facilities include laboratory space and are high energy users, efficiency in building operations and maintenance has been a key sustainability focus in recent years.

Through the Energy Retrofit Program, the school has now completed retrofits that help to streamline operations for maximum efficiency. These include the following:

  • Mechanical, controls, and lighting upgrades at RAF I and II
  • Controls upgrades and new air handler units at Falk
  • Replacement of two rooftop air handlers and a controls upgrade at the Medical School Office Building
  • Replacement of the mechanical system and upgrades to the controls lighting systems at 3155 and 3165 Porter Drive
  • Mechanical controls system upgrades at Beckman

Expected annual energy savings total more than $1.5 million.
