Residential & Dining Enterprises (R&DE) Student Housing partnered with the men of Kappa Sigma in November 2014 to provide all residents in the house the opportunity to divert 100% of their waste from landfill. R&DE worked with students to help determine primary areas for outreach and education. All student rooms received multirecycling bins, and common spaces received four-stream zero-waste stations to collect compost, paper, plastics, metal, glass, and landfill waste. Bathrooms received paper towel composting bins, and the house even received special-event recycling bins for parties.

Kappa Sigma is the first house on campus to go through the pilot; after the rollout, the amount of compost generated at the house more than doubled, allowing landfill capacity at the outside waste corral to be reduced and saving over $5,000 a year. R&DE will use lessons learned from this pilot to continue to expand its zero-waste initiatives into other Row Houses on campus.
