Record Participation in Campus Cleanup Events
The Campus Cleanup program saw a 50% increase in participation in 2014. To make it easy for faculty and staff to recycle office clutter, this biannual waste reduction program places staffed bins around campus to collect items that are no longer being used. Buildings and Grounds Maintenance (BGM) and Peninsula Sanitary Service, Inc. organize Campus Cleanup proactively to reduce the amount of reusable goods sent to landfill. BGM staff sort the collected materials and send reusable items and electronics to the Surplus Sales Office, where they can be resold to the campus community.
The 2014 event diverted more than 60% of donated goods from landfill, including over 40 tons of electronics and items with significant electronic circuitry.
