The Arrillaga Alumni Center is a leader in sustainable information technology (IT). Between 2012 and 2016, Alex Guzhavin, IT Operations Manager in the Alumni Association’s Office of Development, virtualized many of the Alumni Center’s servers. Virtualization reduces the energy consumption of IT equipment by allowing multiple isolated virtual environments to operate on a single machine, reducing the number of physical servers required. A total of 41 servers were decommissioned, and 88% of the department’s computing is now virtualized. The department received a $13,000 rebate for Guzhavin’s efforts, capturing 37,000 kWh of annual energy savings.
