The spectrum of Stanford’s awards and commendations highlights the multifaceted nature of sustainability and spans a wide range of topics. Third-Party Evaluations of Sustainable Stanford

Gold Rating, Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education’s (AASHE’s) Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS)

Stanford earned a Gold rating from AASHE’s latest version (2.0) of its assessment and national rating system. Stanford’s score in 2016 increased six percentage points to 81%, which is the second highest score earned to date of the nearly 800 institutions that participate in STARS. Of those, a total of 96 institutions have achieved a Gold rating.

#5 Ranking, “Cool Schools”

Stanford placed number five on Sierra magazine’s “Cool Schools” list, out of more than 200 institutions evaluated in 2016. The Cool Schools feature story is published in the September/October 2016 issue of Sierra magazine, the official publication of the Sierra Club.

Stanford Energy System Innovations (SESI)

In its first year of operation SESI received global recognition for its excellence in design, innovation, and efficiency.

Governor’s Environmental and Economic Leadership Award, CalEPA

Stanford received the Governor’s Environmental and Economic Leadership Award (GEELA) for its climate action leadership with the SESI project. The GEELA is California’s highest environmental honor.

2016 Global Best Projects Award, Engineering News-Record

SESI was one of 23 projects from 15 different countries and five continents to win 2016 Global Best Projects awards, which identify and honor the project teams behind outstanding design and construction efforts. SESI won the “Green Project” category. Stanford will share the award with Affiliated Engineers Inc., which served as the prime consultant and lead engineer for SESI.

Stanford’s new Central Energy Facility received ENR’s Editor’s Choice and Best Energy/Industrial Project awards in the organization’s Best of the Best Projects awards program. Best of the Best awards are chosen annually by industry judge to identify and highlight the pinnacle of design and construction achievement among U.S. projects.

AIA San Francisco’s Design Awards program recognizes the outstanding achievements in architecture and design of Bay Area individuals and organizations. The Central Energy Facility received the Honor Award for combining function with beauty to achieve a sustainable and educational space.

2015 Citation Award, American Institute of Architects, Portland Chapter

For more than 60 years, the Institute Honor Awards program has recognized achievements for a broad range of architectural activity to elevate the general quality of architecture practice, establish a standard of excellence against which all architects can measure performance, and inform the public of the breadth and value of architecture practice. Stanford received the Portland Chapter’s Citation Award in 2015.

Best Workplaces for Commuters spotlighted 29 employers nationwide during the organization’s Race to Excellence Virtual Awards Ceremony. The program is designed to encourage sustainable transportation innovation.
