In response to the California drought and rising water costs in 2015, Residential & Dining Enterprises (R&DE) Student Housing replaced all of its irrigation equipment with more efficient models across its 57 acres of landscape. This included over 20,000 spray heads, rotors, and flow sensors, as well as 90 new weather-based irrigation controllers that are centrally controlled, receiving real-time water use data. The project resulted in 24 million gallons of water saved in the first year. It has achieved an 73% reduction in domestic, or potable, water used for irrigation and a 26% reduction in lake water used for irrigation.
