More than 2,000 Stanford bicycle commuters and 279 pedestrians participated in Bike to Work Day in May 2015. By biking or walking instead of driving, these commuters eliminated an estimated 5,786 pounds of CO2 emissions. Participation in this event has increased year over year and is now up 39% from 2010 levels. The 807 bicycle commuters who reported their mileage logged a total of 6,386 miles and averaged eight miles per trip.

Riders and walkers could get snacks and free tote bags at 14 energizer stations, which were staffed by 73 volunteers and cohosted by Stanford University, Stanford Health Care, Stanford Children’s Health, and SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. Sprocket Man, Stanford’s bike safety hero, rewarded more than 200 riders for wearing helmets, giving each a free bike light.

In addition, Stanford’s Parking & Transportation Services awarded a bicycle to the winner of the Bike Safety Pledge drawing and a free breakfast to two Stanford departments for logging department members’ rides during Bike Month.
