Inaugural “Green Week” Raises Awareness of Sustainability in Stanford’s Ethnic Community
Members of the Xi Beta chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha organized an inaugural “Green Week,” with a schedule of events aimed at raising awareness of environmental sustainability in the black community at Stanford. The sorority partnered with a variety of student sustainability clubs on campus as well as Office of Sustainability, Residential & Dining Enterprises, and the School of Earth, Energy & Environmental Sciences to offer sustainability engagement opportunities each day. Sponsored events included a Meatless Monday vegetarian dinner at Old Union, Solo cup upcycling at the Graduate School of Business, water conservation tabling at White Plaza, a zero-waste cookout at the Ujamaa theme house, and the harvesting of fruit from area trees to donate to a local homeless shelter. More than 150 students participated in the events, and the group plans to continue to grow programming to make the week an annual tradition.
