In the first “Stories of Sustainability” event, hundreds of students came together to listen to how climate change had impacted the home communities of their peers. The ASSU Executive Committee on Sustainability organized this event with the hope of further engaging the Stanford community in environmental issues. Students shared their stories through mixed media, including narrative, spoken word, poetry, song, and dance.

A key focus of the event was environmental justice, defined by organizers as “preparing all communities for the environmental benefits and burdens of climate change.” To demonstrate that individual students can make a difference, four acts featured stories on how students had supported environmental justice in their home communities.

The three-hour event was emceed by the ASSU president and vice president. It was followed by an ice cream reception to encourage continued dialogue among attendees.
