The Office of Sustainability partnered with the Department of Athletics, Physical Education, and Recreation (DAPER) to pilot a new mobile application that empowers occupants to control the energy usage of devices at their workstations. An energy management technology developed by a company called Keewi was deployed in the Arrillaga Center for Sports and Recreation, the Arrillaga Outdoor Education and Recreation Center, and Burnham Pavilion. Keewi was originally funded by an Innovation Transfer grant from Stanford’s TomKat Center for Sustainable Energy.

The Keewi technology combines a plug-in sensor that connects with workstation devices such as computers, monitors, printers, and desk lamps with a mobile app that encourages occupant engagement. Individuals participating in the pilot are able to log into the app to monitor the energy consumption of their devices, set operation schedules, and remotely power devices on and off. Participants are also able to earn incentives by accruing points for activities such as correctly answering questions of the day (which are applicable to sustainability at Stanford), taking action to reduce device consumption, and achieving certain savings thresholds. The pilot will wrap up in September, at which point the Office of Sustainability will evaluate savings and collect occupant feedback.
