Continued collaboration between Sustainable Stanford and Stanford Athletics resulted in greener athletics facilities, operations, and events this year, as well as greater participant engagement. The Department of Athletics, Physical Education, and Recreation (DAPER) operates 70 buildings on campus, totaling almost 800,000 square feet. Since Stanford became a member of the Green Sports Alliance in 2012, DAPER has worked closely with the Department of Sustainability and Energy Management to reduce resource consumption in its facilities and engage its audience with sustainability programs.

In December 2015, Stanford Athletics launched a new webpage to track the significant milestones that have established this department as a crucial partner in conservation. Stanford Athletics and Sustainable Stanford meet regularly to identify opportunities for partnership throughout their facilities and at their thousands of events each year. This year, the department participated in three sustainability Game Day Challenges, encouraged users of campus recreation centers to “take the Shorter Shower Challenge” as part of a campus-wide effort to save water, and piloted an app aimed at engaging building occupants with plug load management, among other infrastructure projects.
