At their December meeting, Faculty Senate members donned hard hats and safety glasses to tour the new Central Energy Facility, a primary component of the Stanford Energy System Innovations (SESI) project. Following a brief presentation about SESI, members of the senate were guided through the operational areas of the facility by Sustainability and Energy Management staff.

The SESI project, which went online in spring 2015, transformed Stanford’s energy supply to one based on electricity and serves as a living laboratory for sustainability innovation and implementation. Students, staff, and faculty were involved in planning this cross-campus collaboration, which contributes to the university’s educational programming by offering bimonthly tours to the campus community. Nearly 2,000 visitors from across campus and around the world have visited the facility to learn about the project and how it has contributed to Stanford’s sustainability efforts.
