Every year, high school students spend the summer working in the field and in research labs with faculty and advisors at the School of Earth, Energy & Environmental Sciences. With program support, participants experience the day-to-day processes of modern scientists – determining a research focus, collecting and preparing research material, analyzing data, and reporting on findings. Their experience culminates with a poster presentation of their work at the worldwide American Geophysical Union (AGU) Fall Meeting in San Francisco. In addition to sharpening their presentation skills, the AGU meeting introduces the students to the international community of Earth and space scientists in a very social way. Students are given the chance to listen to and learn from industry leaders while sharing their research or learning about findings from other groups at the event, as Stanford Earth Outreach Education Director Jenny Saltzman, instructor Noel Heim, and some of their high school students explain in the video.
